Framed or Frameless Canvas? Finding Your Kind of Finish
A decorative frame changes the mood of a picture. Here is how to choose the finish that feels right for your room.
Read storyMeasure the space, test the outline and choose a scale that gives the animal—and the joke—room to breathe.
A canvas can look generous on a product page and surprisingly small above a sofa. It can also overwhelm the little corner you had in mind. Choosing a size is easier when you begin with the real space rather than the largest option in a list.
Start with the clear wall where the canvas could actually hang. Allow for shelves, switches, doors that swing open and the height of nearby furniture. Write down the width and height of that area, then measure the furniture beneath it.
You do not need to fill every centimetre. Empty wall around a picture helps the subject stand out, especially when the artwork has a bold background or a wonderfully unimpressed expression.
Cut paper to the dimensions you are considering, or assemble smaller sheets into one outline. Hold it against the wall, or use a removable fixing suitable for your wall finish and test it discreetly first. Step back to the place you normally view the wall from.
Try at least two sizes. A piece that feels too large at arm’s length can feel balanced from the doorway. A small canvas that disappears above a wide cabinet may be perfect beside a coffee machine. Check the outline from a seated position as well as standing up.
With humorous animal art, the face often carries the joke. Think about viewing distance: the farther away the picture will be, the more useful a larger face becomes. For a close-up nook, a smaller canvas can feel like a private little discovery.
Five More Minutes, our sleepy pug with an oversized coffee cup, works particularly well where you pause for your first drink of the day. Compare the available sizes on its product page with your paper outline.
Different FansGram pictures have different size selections. The price range reflects those available options; it is not a promise that every artwork comes in every format. Select a size to see its price and composition before adding it to your basket.
For example, The Croissant Critic includes a compact 20 × 25 cm option as well as larger portrait formats. Another picture may include a square size instead. Use the size filter in the shop if you already know the dimensions you need.
Once the scale feels right, check the hanging position and the wall’s suitability. Use fixings appropriate to the wall and the actual weight of the canvas. Keep doors, walkways and frequently moved furniture clear. A few minutes of measuring make the final choice much more confident.
