A Serious Desk, a Very Unserious Colleague: Art for the Home Office

Give your workspace personality with a characterful canvas that fits the room and your working day.

A home office does not have to look like a spare corner waiting for real life to return. One piece of art can make the space feel considered. And if your working day involves a lot of serious expressions on a screen, a bulldog in a tie offers a useful change of company.

Choose your office character

Think about the mood you want beside your desk. The Boss brings comic authority: a straight face, a tie and a desk that means business. Customer Support offers a friendlier kind of colleague.

The right joke is one you still enjoy after a busy week. A subtle animal expression may be easier to live with than an overt slogan, especially if the room also serves as a guest bedroom or reading space.

Decide who gets the view

Art above your monitor may be visible to you throughout the day. Art behind your chair may appear in video calls. Those are different roles. Check the camera view before committing to a position, particularly if a canvas edge could appear to grow out of your head on screen.

If the room is shared, consider the view from the doorway too. A picture can connect the work corner to the rest of the home rather than making it feel like a separate office cubicle.

Work with the desk, not against it

A dark teal background pairs comfortably with warm timber and simple metal details. A lighter print can soften a darker desk setup. Choose one colour from the canvas to repeat in a notebook, cushion or small object, then let the remaining surfaces stay quiet.

A larger picture can anchor a wide workstation; a compact canvas may work better above a narrow side table. Test the outline at the actual viewing distance. Use our size guide if you are deciding between two options.

Leave room for the work

Keep shelves, cables and task lighting practical. Avoid positioning a canvas where a moving monitor arm or chair might hit it. Notice how daylight falls across the wall and choose a place away from prolonged direct sun and nearby heat.

You do not need a complete redesign. Clear a small patch of wall, organise the surface beneath it and let the picture become the focal point.

Make it personal, not performative

The most convincing workspaces reflect the person who uses them. Your art does not have to communicate ambition or productivity. It can simply be a face that makes you smile between tasks. A well-chosen animal colleague asks for very little: enough wall space, a secure fixing and no invitation to the next meeting.
